| MONDAY AUGUST 28 An email from Marni Cordell (Spinach7 Magazine) which leads to us hosting this very special screening: "An american filmmaker, david martinez, is going to be in town on 28 and 29 august with his doco '500 Miles To Babylon' (more info below). I've seen it and it's really interesting - it basically charts iraqi attitudes to the american occupation from invasion until just after those western (so-called) contractors were burnt and hung from a bridge in fallujah. it shows how the insurgency really only began after the US retaliated by bombing the shit out of fallujah, and gives a real from-the-ground perspective that i haven't seen anywhere else - mostly because most journos don't venture out of the green zone because it's too dangerous." 500
Miles to Babylon is a one-hour documentary film about Iraq
under U.S. occupation. Narrated by the filmmaker, using footage shot
in Iraq during 2003-4, the film addresses the current war not simply
as a conflict over petroleum profits or a scheme to fill a company's
coffers, but as part of a larger American imperial project. Through
impromptu interviews, glimpses of daily life, still photographs, and
footage of car-bombs, demonstrations, night-time graffiti artists, and
the celebrations following Saddam's capture, 500 Miles To Babylon reveals
the situation in contemporary Iraq through a cinema verite lens. More
than a simple anti-war movie, 500 Miles… follows a journal-esque
"narrative of disintegration", showing the initial excitement
of some sectors of the Iraqi population after the U.S. military toppled
Saddam Hussein, their hope eroding as they watched their country sink
into chaos and violence in the months that followed. The film ends with
the April 2004 assault on Fallujah, when all of Iraq was rising against
the Americans, and includes rare footage from inside besieged Fallujah,
where the filmmaker went with a group of journalists and aid workers
to deliver medical supplies and move wounded civilians to Baghdad. About the filmmaker: David Martinez is a journalist and filmmaker originally from Texas. He has worked as a video correspondent in Aceh, Indonesia as well as in Iraq where he worked with Prothap Chatterjee (www.corpwatch.org) covering the U.S. occupation in 2003-4. Most recently he produced one segment of a film about music in Sumatra, Sumatran Folk Cinema, for the Sublime Frequencies label (www.sublimefrequencies). Mr. Martinez currently makes his home in San Francisco. http://www.graffitifilms.com/bio.htm _________________________________ |

| SATURDAY AUGUST 19 ---about the screening--- Jo Law and Redmond Bridgeman have worked for more than 15 years making, producing, and teaching film and video culture in Perth. They occupy a unique position in Australian film culture, embracing both ends of the technological spectrum: from "camera-less" films scratched and sticky-taped together on 16mm, through super 8 home movies, to micro-mini digital MPEGs designed for delivery to your PDA. Jo and Redmond will be joining us on Saturday night to run the projectors, introduce the films, and answer all your questions! ---a bit about PRIMARY SOURCES: The Teaching and Learning Cinema--- The Teaching and Learning Cinema (TLC) is an initiative of Louise Curham and Lucas Ihlein. It's an evolution of SMIC (Sydney Moving Image Coalition). Upping the ante in the culture of participation, the TLC focuses on showing moving-image works in an informal, discursive atmosphere. 8PM,
