WEDNESDAY JULY 30 TONIGHT, IN THIS VERY RING The Awesomeness of Pro-Wrestling (Screening & Infotainment) Come learn why wrestling is THE great artform of the 21st century while watching some of the most spectacular matches of recent years with Sydney's greatest Pro-Wrestling expert, SHANE McGRATH. Between the steroids and painkiller abuse, shitty working conditions, combat-zone mortality rate, and badly-acted, badly-written storylines, pro-wrestling may be literally the worst industry in the world. But that doesn't mean it isn't awesome! From corporate arena spectacle to low-budget shows in high-school gyms, this is a night not to be missed. Oh my God, not the Death Valley Driver onto the ladder! This one's going to be a slobberknocker, folks.

FRIDAY JULY 25 Loose Space and Circular Time UK film and video veteran Steven Ball will be in Sydney briefly next week. The Teaching and Learning Cinema is delighted to be presenting an retrospective of his film and video work produced during the last twenty years. Lucas from the TLC first met Steven in 2003 during an Expanded Cinema research trip to London. Steven is a research fellow at the British Artists’ Film and Video Study Collection, and he helped dig through the archives to find documentation of film performances from the 1970s in London. As it turns out, Steven actually spent a several years in Melbourne from the late 1980s, shooting and organising screening programmes with the Melbourne super 8 group. In London, he is one of the organisers of cogcollective, a group which curates grassroots screenings of experimental film and video work. Steven has prepared a special programme for Sydney. You can view the whole programme in detail here. We’re very pleased to see that the programme includes Super 8 films shot in Australia, some of which he has re-edited recently, drawing together fragments of small-gauge footage in a memory-montage landscape film: The Ground, The Sky and the Island (2008). Our screening event will be the world-premiere of this work! Between the longer pieces, Steven’s programme is peppered with his “videoblog” experimental sketches from the series Direct Language. On his visit to Sydney, Steven looks forward to engaging with local film and video makers, and he will be happy to discuss his participation in the many film and activist groups which he’s been involved in for many years. _________________________________ |

THURSDAY MAY 8, 08 BIG FAG PRESS presents the launch of its special edition, collectable, snazzy, BIG FAG PRESS BROCHURE as BIG POSTER To be opened by Glenn Barkley, curator at the MCA and one of the most prominent collectors of zine, posters and art ephemera. BIG FAG PRESS is a collectively owned, ethically operated, non-profit community printing press. No other such organisation has existed in Sydney for many years. Whilst much publicity and communication activity for community groups and artists has shifted its focus to an online environment, there is clearly still a need for physical, enduring documents which are, importantly, artworks in themselves. The gala event will launch a BIG FAG PRESS brochure that folds out to a massive A1+ poster, showing what the press is capable of. A collection of the press' output to-date will also be on exhibition. The launch will also be the chance for the collective to introduce its latest development, THE ACQUISITION OF A RISO MACHINE!, (to be called Fagette - Little sister of the Big Fag!) therefore expanding the facilities of the press and giving an extra needed push to Sydney's independent media. This project was assisted by a grant from Arts NSW, an agency of the New South Wales Government, through a program administered by the National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA)

Before he goes we are getting him to talk about his work, and about Singapore, and about whatever tangents come from those two topics. Dennis is the founder and housekeeper of the independent artist space The Other House in Little India, Singapore. In a city where every detail of public artistic activities must first be proposed to -and passed by - the government, Dennis will discuss the state of "independant" and subversive arts there today. However, it is said that there hasn't ever been any problems with addiction to two-up (except me!), which I reason is due to the unflinching fairness of the This year I asked Sydney if I could host a game at their fine establishment and I hope you can join me for an afternoon of side-betting, unusual wagers and NO CARLTON DRAUGHT! SUN MARCH 18 An evening with persistent friends: But this is anime at the highest level of storytelling. A hedonistic cockroach utopia becomes cockroach hell as an analogy about Japan's position relation with The United States: once holocaust victims of the latters military might, now living it up in boomtime decadence, but what if the US were to turn into an enemy again? Be forewarned: after you watch it, you might not want to swat or spray that roach in your kitchen quite so fast again. _________________________________ |
